Dear lover,
How do you do?
What should I call you?
Baby? Sweetie? Honey?
Or the most beloved word of all.
Your name.
The first of many labels forced upon you
I don’t know your name, not yet.
I don’t know what you look like, what you do, where you live, what tongues you speak.
Do you have piercing blue eyes?
Or brooding brown ones, like mine?
You are the hidden treasure I now search for
At the prime of my youth, beauty, fertility, optimism
I quest to find you.
We were pre-destined to meet, you and I.
When we descended from Heaven, we bade each other goodbye.
It was not goodbye forever, but a “see you later”
When we parted
You gave me a kiss on the forehead, smiled, and whispered in my ear
“Wait for me.”
And then it began.
Life.
Nine months ensconced in our mother’s womb
By God’s miracle, we grew into a baby
All our primal needs met, we were safe
Safe from the world’s ugliness
A stranger to the world’s beauty
Without consciousness, we were spared demons
It was a microcosmic heaven
Gone as soon as it came
A piercing wail when we left the warmth
The fluorescent lights were blinding
Voices of doctors, overwhelming
Our parents gave us unsolicited life
And so it began
Learning, first about the world, then about ourselves.
Looking in the mirror, hating what we saw.
Tears shed alone at night.
Pain hidden behind a veneer of strength.
Darkness in whatever shade God chose for us.
Achievement that we racked up to fill the void in our soul.
Shame for that which we did not ask for.
Striving, never-ending striving, for more.
Joy when things start going right again.
And one random Tuesday
The day starts like any other
By a stroke of luck and divine caress
Our paths cross once again
Two perfect strangers who completed each other
Yin to my Yang
Calm to my Storm
Water to my Fire
It was like you had never left.
Hello, lover
How do you do?
Tell me about your time on Earth.
Was the world kind to you?
Or cruel, like it was to me?
Can we join hands and heal our wounds?
Where mom and dad failed us, we will triumph
Together.
I lean in close and ask you
“Where have you been?”
You kiss me on the neck and whisper
“Waiting for you.”
I frown and ask, “Why did it take so long?”
And you reply
“We had to forget each other so we had room to know ourselves.”
I smile at your wisdom, enchanted by your depth
I grow hungry to learn you
Your life is a gripping novel
I just can’t put down
A complex puzzle waiting to be solved
A code to be cracked
A lock waiting for its key
At least, we found each other
And a new chapter begins
That we will co-author till the end.
What stories will we build together?
How much good can we do, beside one another?
Maybe you’ll change my mind
And one day I will become a mother
The beauty is in our unwritten destiny.
I can’t wait to meet you, Lover.
