Dearest readers,
Happy Saturday! Ah, how I relish my weekends. This is the time when I host my free community events for Venture True Wellness:
- Saturday 8:30-9am: breathing and meditation
- Sunday 1:30-2:30pm: expressive writing group
- Sunday 3-4pm: mental health peer support group
I’m about a few weeks into offering these online events for my community, and it really is the best feeling to give back to others without any expectation of monetary reward in return. Giving back from the goodness of your heart. In yoga, the Sanskrit word for service is “seva”, which is defined as service with sincerity. The reward is the pure happiness and fulfillment that stems from doing something good for those around you.
This morning was a case in point. I had three people join my breathing and meditation group, and I think they really enjoyed it! I was able to help them decompress, relax, and kick off their weekend on a positive note. Science shows that performing random acts of kindness boosts your mood and dopamine, and I experienced exactly that, after my class.
So next time you are feeling down, one way to boost your mood is to do something good for someone else. Whether that is calling up a friend to check up on them, calling your mom to say hello and tell her how much you love her, giving a stranger a compliment, holding the door open, or treating a friend to coffee. Any act of kindness, no matter how small, will leave you feeling happy and proud of yourself. It costs you nothing to be selfless, and you have everything to gain from it! Try to squeeze in as many random acts of kindness in a day, and at the end of the day, make an itemized list of all the good work you did for others, and give yourself a pat on the back.
You are appreciated, you are loved, and never forget that. Have a great weekend, everyone!
