If you’re anything like me, the thought of sitting still for an extended period of time sounds less than appealing. You may even call yourself the most restless person you know. With a mind that jumps from task to task, it can feel like you’re an Energizer Bunny. You might find yourself constantly needing a change of scenery and getting antsy when bored, especially when trying to focus on something important. These are often hallmarks of a hyperactive brain—you have a lot of pent-up energy that needs releasing.

So, how can you cope with this? The answer might be simpler than you think: short exercise bursts.

I’ve recently incorporated this self-care hack into my routine, and it has been a game changer. Instead of fighting my hyperactivity, I embrace it by channeling that energy into quick exercise spurts. Before I tackle a task that demands a tremendous amount of focus, like writing a blog post or creating a business plan, I take a few minutes to move my body and get my heart rate up.

It doesn’t have to be a full-blown workout. Just a few minutes of intentional movement can do the trick. You could:

  • Run around the block
  • Run up and down the stairs
  • Do 2 rounds of sun salutations
  • 10 pushups
  • 10 jump-squats
  • 20 jumping-jacks

The goal is to shake off that restless energy so you can re-center your mind. After a quick burst of activity, my brain feels refocused, my body feels less antsy, and I can dive into my work with more clarity. It’s a simple yet powerful way to manage restlessness and improve productivity. If you struggle with hyperactivity and can’t seem to sit still for long stretches, this self-care hack may be exactly what you need.
